Habitat: The new Sorber Mountain Adopt-a-Highway sign is still not in place. As per Dale’s observation, the trees on SGL 13 from the 2003-2004 project are blossoming well. The Cider Run trees are also blossoming. At Sorber Mountain, many of the trees were knocked over, but many are blossoming, and many are likely to bear fruit this fall. The flat pea planted on Sorber Mountain will need lime, but are doing well.

President: The checks were received for the scholarship and the Luzerne County Conservation District. The leadership workshop is August 4-5 in State College, and Dale and Berny will be attending. The Muncy Creek project is on hold. Dale met with Delaney this evening regarding the mandatory use of orange during turkey season. Data shows no significant change in hunting accidents with use of orange vs. no orange. Dale encouraged contacting the commissioners encouraging changing the use of orange from mandatory to voluntary. Thursday of this week (June 21, 2007), Dale will have an opportunity to meet with Delaney during a tour of SGL 57. Though the focus will be on deer management, Dale will have an opportunity to show what the Red Rock Chapter has accomplished on SGL 57. Dale encouraged support of House Bill 13, which has passed the House but still needs to go through Senate. The Bill would stop landowners from being sued by hunters. Currently, landowners tend to deny access to hunters seeking permission to hunt due to liability concerns, resulting in a lack of hunting areas. Dale discussed statistics from this past spring’s turkey harvest. The number of turkeys harvested was down 7%, likely related to hens nesting late due to the cold and snow. The 5 Star Chapter requirements have not been committed to due to a WITO event. Damien discussed the planting project of chestnut trees from several years ago at the Sarah Dymond Elementary School. None of the trees survived. He suggested a project with the school for maintaining the nature trail, as well as planting. Dale encouraged members to visit the PA Game Commission web site to keep up on changes.
