NWTF RED ROCK CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES
APRIL 20, 2009
Meeting was called to order at 7:15pm
Vice President: No report
Treasurer: Beginning balance: $1997.60 Ending balance: $3298.79 50/50: $520.00 (Includes correction from last month’s report). Also to be added is $500 received from the Superfund for the JAKES event.
Habitat: The docks at Moon Lake Park were put in place April 4. The Sorber Mountain road cleanup is April 26 at 1pm. June 13 is the Beth Run planting project. Over 40 people attended the March 21 apple tree pruning project. A video was done of the project, and a press release for the project will be submitted by Damien. Dale discussed the importance of Mason bees, that apple trees do not produce at times due to lack of the bees. With the planting of early bloomers like red buds and the placement of bee homes, better-producing apple trees would result. Damien noted he can have the wood for the bee homes donated, likely cedar, and have his students build the homes. This will likely be a project for spring of 2010. Damien noted a joint project planned May 17 at Frances E. Walter Dam with the JAKES and Pheasants Forever, a clear-cut in preparation to plant seasonal grasses.
JAKES: Our JAKES event had 313 registered, with approximately 20-25 no-shows. The approximate final count was 290. The total expenses for the event are not calculated yet. Another order for T-Shirts will be submitted, and interested chapter members may purchase a T-Shirt for $5.00. The event overall went very well and Chastity and Dale thanked everyone for a successful event, our best ever.. Registration is always a time-consuming factor. A deadline will be added to next year’s applications and will be limited to first 300 applicants. An extra fee will be considered for later registrations, and the price will need to be adjusted for JAKES and Extreme JAKES. Chastity suggested considering having more instructors and three separate age groups. Damien noted the need for youth bows at the archery range. The State does own some Genesis bows, but we need to reserve them for use.
President: There will be a project to build a permanent fireplace at the new pavilion at Moon Lake Park. Materials will be provided. There will be a group project on September 19, 2009 at 9am to improve the shooting range at Moon Lake, involving planting clover, rye, and orchard grass. Dale has 25-50 crab apple trees to be planted. These will be planted at Cider Run on May 7, 2009, at 6pm. Representatives from Mehoopany Creek Watershed contacted Dale regarding interest in reconstructing a swinging bridge that was damaged by flooding near Mehoopany. The cost would be approximately $11,000. The project has been approved but funding is needed, through grants and other organizations such as the Conservation Coalition. It would be a community-based project promoting safe public access to hunting areas. Damien suggested getting an external hard drive to back up our web site. The cost would be approximately $99-119, and chapter members approved the purchase. The Chapter also approved loaning our bows to an organization that requested them.
Banquet: A deposit of $100 was submitted to Gennetti’s for next year’s banquet.
Meeting adjourned at 8:50pm
